Kevin Rielly
Animal Bone Specialist
Kevin has worked as an archaeozoologist since 1982, initially working freelance based at the Institute of Archaeology, University College. He then spent several years working with a team of environmental archaeology specialists at the Museum of London Archaeology Services, before attaining the position as resident archaeozoologist at Pre-Construct Archaeology in 2007.
His early work involved numerous animal bone collections from England and abroad, including the very large assemblages recovered during the Cusichaca Project in Peru and from Pella and Umm Qeis (Gadara) in Jordan. While at MoLA and then at PCA, the work has essentially focused on London and the Home Counties, although also from sites in East Anglia (notably the large Saxon collection from Ipswich) and Northern England (as Alnwick Castle and Bedale). His interests include faunal remains denoting the post-medieval tanning industry, cattle burials pertaining to 18th century rinderpest pandemics, the use of cetaceans through all periods and evidence pertaining to the introduction and spread of the black rat in Britain.
