Archaeological excavation provides a detailed record of buried remains that will be affected by development or other land use. Through controlled excavation and recording, our teams investigate archaeological deposits, structures and finds to understand the development and use of a site.
From excavation to archive
Our field teams undertake targeted and large-scale excavations across a wide range of sites and periods. Work is carefully planned around the archaeological remains, the development programme and the agreed mitigation strategy, with detailed written, photographic and digital recording throughout.
Excavation may follow archaeological evaluation where significant remains have been identified and preservation in situ is not appropriate or achievable. The results are assessed alongside specialist analysis and research, with reporting, archiving and publication undertaken where required.
