Archaeological evaluation provides a structured investigation of a site to establish the presence, nature, extent, date and significance of archaeological remains. It can provide the evidence needed to inform planning decisions and determine whether further archaeological work is required.
Investigating the archaeological potential
We design evaluation programmes around the site, its archaeological potential and the requirements of the project. Depending on the circumstances, this may include trial trenching, test pits, geophysical survey or other targeted investigation.
Our field teams carefully record archaeological deposits, structures and finds, with the results assessed and reported to provide a clear understanding of what survives on the site. The findings can help inform the design of a development, identify areas requiring preservation or mitigation, and establish the scope of any further archaeological work.
