PCA works with developers, schools, local communities and heritage organisations to share the archaeology uncovered through our projects. Our community archaeology and outreach activities include volunteering, open days, site tours, school visits, talks, workshops, finds handling and public events.
Getting involved with PCA projects
Opportunities vary between projects, depending on the archaeology, programme and site conditions. PCA has involved local communities in projects including Central Winchester Regeneration, Hyde Abbey and Hardwick Park, giving people opportunities to see archaeological work in progress, take part in practical activities and learn more about discoveries from our teams.
We also work with schools and community groups, using archaeological finds, excavation results and specialist expertise to bring the subject to life and connect people with the history of their local area.
Sharing discoveries
Our archaeologists and specialists share discoveries throughout the life of a project, from excavation and finds processing to specialist analysis and interpretation. Open days, talks, displays and other outreach activities provide opportunities to make archaeological work accessible to a wider audience.
Having watched Time Team for years, I decided to do a day of volunteering yesterday Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited in Winchester. Three learnings.
ð Something I had never done before. Had the usual fears that someone else would do it better. That was bollocks.
ð Cleaning animal bones is very therapeutic. Pigs teeth are scary.
ð Â Amazing to touch the very things people were eating, making and burning in the medieval age, just yards from our house. Humble lives in what is now a very expensive place.
