A Desk-based assessment (DBA) brings together existing archaeological, historical and environmental information to establish what is known about a site and its surroundings. It provides an evidence base for understanding archaeological potential and informing planning decisions.
Assessing archaeological potential
Our assessments draw on a range of sources, including the Historic Environment Record, historic maps, documentary sources, previous archaeological investigations and available environmental information. We use this evidence to identify known remains, assess the potential for previously unrecorded archaeology and consider how development proposals may affect the historic environment.
A DBA can help establish whether further archaeological work is likely to be required and inform the scope and design of subsequent investigations.
